The Virtues of the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan
Seeking Laylatul Qadr and Increasing Worship in the Final Days of Ramadan
Darul Shukur Islamic Resource Center
The last ten nights of Ramadan are among the most blessed and spiritually significant nights of the entire year. During this sacred period, Muslims increase their acts of worship, seek the forgiveness of Allah, and search for the blessed Night of Power known as Laylatul Qadr.
These nights provide a great opportunity for believers to renew their faith, strengthen their connection with Allah, and earn immense rewards that may surpass the rewards of many years of worship.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to exert extra effort in worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan more than at any other time of the month.
Aisha (RA) reported: “When the last ten nights of Ramadan began, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waist belt (work harder in worship), stay up during the night, and wake his family for prayer.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This authentic narration clearly demonstrates the importance of these nights and the need for Muslims to take advantage of them through increased devotion.
Why the Last Ten Nights Are So Important
The greatest reason for the importance of these nights is the presence of Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree or Night of Power), a night that Allah has described as being better than a thousand months.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. (Qur’an 97:1-3)
This means that worship performed on this single night is better than worship performed for more than eighty-three years.
Such an incredible reward highlights the mercy of Allah toward His servants.
---Seeking Laylatul Qadr
The Prophet ﷺ instructed Muslims to search for Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan.
“Seek Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Many scholars mention that Laylatul Qadr is most likely to occur during the odd-numbered nights of the final ten nights, such as:
- The 21st night
- The 23rd night
- The 25th night
- The 27th night
- The 29th night
Because the exact night is not known with certainty, Muslims are encouraged to increase their worship throughout all ten nights so that they do not miss this extraordinary opportunity.
---Acts of Worship to Increase During the Last Ten Nights
During this blessed time, Muslims are encouraged to increase various acts of worship to maximize their spiritual rewards.
1. Night Prayer (Qiyam al-Layl / Tahajjud)
Standing in prayer during the nights of Ramadan is one of the greatest acts of worship.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This includes the special night prayers known as Taraweeh and Tahajjud.
---2. Recitation of the Qur’an
Ramadan is known as the month of the Qur’an. Allah says:
“The month of Ramadan in which the Qur’an was revealed as guidance for mankind.” (Qur’an 2:185)
For this reason, Muslims should increase their recitation, reflection, and study of the Qur’an during these nights.
---3. Making Du’a (Supplication)
Supplication is one of the most powerful forms of worship, especially during the blessed nights of Ramadan.
Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ what she should say if she finds Laylatul Qadr, and he replied:
“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.” (Hadith – Tirmidhi)
This simple yet profound supplication focuses on seeking Allah’s forgiveness, which is one of the greatest blessings a believer can attain.
---4. I’tikaf (Spiritual Retreat)
Another important Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ during the last ten nights is I’tikaf, which means staying in the mosque for the purpose of worship and devotion to Allah.
“The Prophet ﷺ used to perform I’tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
I’tikaf allows Muslims to disconnect from worldly distractions and dedicate their time entirely to prayer, remembrance of Allah, and reflection.
---The Wisdom Behind the Final Ten Nights
Allah placed these blessed nights at the end of Ramadan to encourage believers to finish the month with strong devotion and sincerity.
Sometimes people begin Ramadan with enthusiasm but gradually lose energy as the month progresses. The last ten nights serve as a powerful reminder to renew our commitment and strive harder in worship.
It is also a sign of Allah’s mercy that He provides believers with a night whose reward exceeds a lifetime of worship.
---Conclusion
The last ten nights of Ramadan represent a priceless opportunity for Muslims to gain immense spiritual rewards, seek forgiveness, and strengthen their relationship with Allah.
By increasing prayer, reciting the Qur’an, making sincere supplications, giving charity, and striving to find Laylatul Qadr, believers can transform their lives and earn blessings that will benefit them in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah allow us to benefit from the final nights of Ramadan, accept our worship, forgive our sins, and grant us the blessings of Laylatul Qadr.
